Va. Plantation Reunion Aims to Unite Descendants

May 5, 2013

ALTAVISTA, Va. (AP) - A museum in Altavista is planning a reunion for the descendants of plantation families, including enslaved and free workers.

The reunion is planned at Avoca Museum, a former plantation in Altavista. Museum director Frank Murray tells the News & Advance he hopes to bridge a gap by bringing people together.

The museum is seeking the descendants of workers who toiled for two plantation families, the Lynches and the Dearings. Anyone who thinks they have a connection is encouraged to come.

One goal of the event is to expand museum records on the names of those who worked at the plantations and are buried in a slave cemetery. Researchers have already begun the task of identifying the workers through various records.
