Va. Republicans Discuss Medicaid during Luncheon

Nov. 21, 2013

Republican 25th District Delegate Steve Landes joined a luncheon on Thursday, talking about Medicaid.

It's going to be a big issue in the Virginia General Assembly this coming January.

As part of the President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, the Commonwealth could extend coverage to an additional 400,000 people.

However, Virginia republicans are worried about the cost, and concerned the federal government won't pick up its part of the bill.

“Potentially going forward it can have about almost half a billion to a quarter of a billion dollar impact on Virginia's budget, after or with the 90% of the federal government is supposed to be allowing,” said Delegate Landes. “So that's a big ticket item.”

Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe is pushing hard for the Medicaid expansion for low-income Virginians, saying it's vital for the economic health of the state.
