Va. State Police Adding Patrols for St. Patrick's Day, Weekend

March 14, 2014

Virginia State Police say they'll be conducting extra patrols and DUI checkpoints this weekend, in anticipation of Saint Patrick's Day on Monday.

Troopers will be out this weekend, looking for drunk drivers, and there will be checkpoints across the Commonwealth.

They ask that if you plan on drinking, designate a sober driver.

“Drunk driving is 100 percent irresponsible and preventable. It’s tragic to lose someone to an alcohol- related crash because the choice was not made to simply drive sober or not at all,” said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent. “The cost of a cab ride is far less expensive than the cost of a DUI conviction. Designate a sober driver and don’t jeopardize lives on the road.”

Officials say 229 people were killed in 2012 because of alcohol-related crashes in Virginia.
