Va. Supreme Court Drops Suit Against YMCA at McIntire Park

The Virginia Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County in their efforts to build a YMCA in McIntire Park.

The ruling says the lower courts did not have the legal standing to block the deal.

"Its been a long time in coming for the 'Y,'" said YMCA Board Chair Kurt Krueger. "We got our ground lease in January 2008. It's been a number of years since we've been held up by these lawsuits."

Local gyms ACAC and Gold's sued the city and county, claiming they did not get a fair chance to bid on the project. The court disagreed with that claim. Representatives for ACAC were not pleased with the court's decision.

"ACAC was disappointed with the ruling," said Christine Thalwitz, ACAC's director of communications and research. "But we appreciated that the Virginia State Supreme Court saw fit to hear the case. They saw merit that warranted the review of the case."

Though the group doesn't agree with the court's decision, they say they respect it. They say they are ready to move ahead.

Meanwhile, YMCA supporters are ready to start building. Krueger says the new facility will give people of all economic levels an opportunity to interact with one another and exercise.
