LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - A 24-year-old transgender woman in Lynchburg says a judge rejected her request to legally change her name.
Now, Joseph David Fialkowski says she'll try anew to have her name changed to Julianna Tourmaline Fialkowski. She says she has been receiving hormone treatments for more than a year and is recognized as female on her driver's license.
The News & Advance says Fialkowski's application for a name change was denied in January by Lynchburg Circuit Judge F. Patrick Yeatts.
Her attorney says no reason was stated for the denial.
At the January hearing, Fialkowski said Yeatts asked about her transition from male to female. She said he expressed concerns that she had not been living long enough as a female.
The newspaper said it could not reach Yeatts for comment.
