Va. Trooper Intentionally Run Down by Driver

January 26, 2013

PULASKI, Va. (AP) - A Virginia State Police trooper is hospitalized after being run down by a car in Pulaski County.

Spokeswoman Corinne Geller says Senior Trooper J.A. Jones is being treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after he was intentionally run down on Route 100 early Saturday. The 48-year-old, 21-year veteran has serious injuries that are not considered life threatening.

Geller says Jones was struck when he stopped to check on a pedestrian in the road. The man became combative after Jones offered assistance but he fled in a car. Then Jones saw another vehicle also leaving the scene and gestured for the driver to stop but instead the driver steered his car at Jones, striking him and knocking him to the ground. The driver fled the scene.

State police are investigating.
