Va. Deputy Fatally Shoots Gunman

June 13, 2012

Virginia State Police are assisting in the investigation of the fatal shooting of a man by a Cumberland County sheriff's deputy.

State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the deputy responded to a call about shots fired at a residence in Cumberland Courthouse on Tuesday night. After arriving, the deputy shot an armed man after the man refused to comply with an order to put down his handgun.

Geller says 49-year-old Bennett McKay died at the scene.

The deputy wasn't injured and has been placed on administrative leave. His name wasn't released.
