A volunteer firefighter from Gore, Va., died Monday morning after the tanker truck his father was driving crashed on a mutual aid call in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle.

Frederick County Fire and Rescue officials say 21-year-old Zachary Whitacre died after being taken to Winchester Medical Center.

The accident happened on Route 50 just over the West Virginia line. Whitacre and his father, Donald, were heading to Capon Bridge around 4 a.m. to pick up water before responding to a reported structure fire when the elder Whitacre lost control of the truck on the ice-covered road.

Donald Whitacre was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The Gore station has been placed out of service and is being staffed by firefighters from Winchester.
