Va.'s Coast Begins Seeing Effects of Sandy

October 28, 2012

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Parts of Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore already are seeing effects of Hurricane Sandy, as officials urge residents in much of the state that time is running out to prepare for a storm that could stick around several days.

Several low-lying streets already were flooded on Sunday. At the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, stores that weren't already closed for the season were seeing few customers as many stayed in out of the rain. Along the shore, winds were heavy as some ventured out to take pictures of the ocean.

On Chincoteague Island, few were heeding advice for a voluntary evacuation.

Conditions were expected to deteriorate throughout the day on Sunday, with the worst expected on Monday.

Dominion Virginia Power reported more than 1,400 customers without power, mostly in southeastern Virginia.
