A vigil in Albemarle County will honor Virginia transportation employees killed in roadway work zones. The vigil is scheduled for two o'clock April 23 at the VDOT Workers' Memorial on eastbound interstate 64 on the east side of Afton Mountain. This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week.
"What makes this memorial so important and why it's here is to make people understand that the people who did this...its mothers and fathers driving their children to school, workers, people going to work," said Sean Connaughton, the Secretary of Transportation for Virginia.
There are 132 VDOT workers engraved on the memorial who have died in the past 80 years.
