Virginia Adventures: King's Dominion

May 22, 2013

In the last edition of Virginia Adventures, Dan Schutte takes us 81 miles to the East, for a local staple: King's Dominion

The view is pretty good at King's Dominion, especially from the top of the 27 story Drop Tower.

It also changes really fast,

"When you were on it they were singing a song to you," says Gene Petreillo with King's Dominion. "You had no idea what was going on, then they drop you right down."

The next stop is The Intimidator roller coast, and when you look at where you are about to go you realize its not just a clever name.

The ride is fast. 90 miles per hour fast.

And when you get back to the station you notice something, even if you aren't trying to be cool, the force of the air rushing past will pop your collar for you.

"people don't realize how fast that ride is," says Petreillo. "you are on the top of that lift hill in under 20 seconds, and then you are going 90 plus miles an hour, instantly it's a coast unlike any other, especially here in the Mid-Atlantic region."

Next is The Volcano, and there is no hill to climb on this one, you just go.

"its the only active Volcano in the state of Virginia, the best part about that ride is it's a launch roller coaster" explains Petreillo. "You start real slow and think what's really going on here, then all of a sudden Zero to Seventy blasting out of the station, then you hit a second launch which blasts you up to 150 feet in the air out of a volcano then you are hitting some hairpin turns all around as you go through the ride."

Lastly, something a little more old school: The Grizzly

The old wooden coaster tosses you around a bit, but there is nothing like it.

Petreillo has a little insider information for us too:

"Maybe head to the bottom of the park first, wait 35 to 40 minutes and work your way up to the front of the park later in the day."

The best days of the week are Tuesday and Wednesday, and try to go early, and be ready for some serious speed.
