Virginia Drops Season Opener 28-20 to UCLA

No. 3 UCLA beat Virginia Saturday as the Bruins defense scored three touchdowns in the second quarter.

UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley was sacked five times by the Cavaliers and made his biggest play, a six-yard touchdown run, late in the third quarter.

Virginia sophomore quarterback Matt Johns stepped in for starter Greyson Lambert later in the first half after UCLA took a 21-3 lead off forced turnovers.

Johns connected with Andre Levrone on a 29-yard pass to score the 'Hoos' first touchdown of the day with less than a minute in the first half.

The sophomore continued his momentum in the second half, hitting Darius Jennings with a 23-yarder in the third quarter.

Hundley's rushing touchdown gave UCLA a 28-17 lead heading into the fourth quarter and although Virginia scored the game's final points -- a 27-yard field goal -- with 6:47 to play, it wasn't enough to over power the top-ten opponent.

"I'll tell you what, I'm so proud of the young men in that locker room and the coaches," coach Mike London said after the loss. "That's a team that some picked to win the PAC 12, some pick to win it all and we did a lot of good things today.

"Obviously the turnovers hurt us, but more than that, I'm more proud of this team and the effort."

Johns' takeaway from the game was similar.

"(We saw) that we can play with anyone," he said. "You look at them, they're seventh in the country. Our defense held them to one touchdown, and we battled and battled on offense, and we gave ourselves opportunities. But unfortunately we didn't come out on top, and we need to."

The Cavaliers will have their next opportunity to come out on top when they host Richmond Saturday September 6 at 3:30 p.m.
