The number of flu cases in Virginia is dipping slightly, but health officials are worried about a possible second wave.
The flu has been widespread in Virginia since mid-December, which is unusually early. Now the first round appears to be winding down, but there are still months left in the flu season and experts say flu cases may spike for a second time, in a matter of days.
"We are still seeing flu symptoms but not as many as we were seeing weeks ago," said Lucie Lafontaine with Martha Jefferson Hospital. "My understanding is that we are expected to see a second round of it soon."
This year's flu strain is also more severe than usual, pushing many patients to rush to the hospital. But experts say people without other serious health problems should take over-the-counter medication and stay at home. They also say it's not too late to get a flu shot.
