The Commonwealth of Virginia has officially sworn in its first openly gay judge.
Tracy Thorne-Begland took the oath at Richmond City Hall on Friday. He's now the presiding judge at the city's general district court.
Thorne-Begland's road to the bench came with complications. The General Assembly rejected his initial appointment last year.
This year, some members reiterated the same concerns they had last year, saying they had concerns for perceived activism coming from the bench if he were approved.
Thorne-Begland was approved by the House of Delegates and Senate in the 2013 General Assembly session. He will serve a six-year term.
