The Washington Post reports that federal prosecutors told Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen they would be charged after the first of the year in connection with the Star Scientific gift giving scandal, but not right away.
According to the report, after attorneys for the Governor and his wife met with prosecutors, the decision was made to wait on charges until after McDonnell leaves office on January 11th.
A final decision to press charges is expected in the next two weeks, but could come as late as February. A spokesperson for McDonnell's legal team declined to comment.
The last months of McDonnell's term were marred by the gift giving scandal involving loans and gifts from Star Scientific and it's CEO Jonnie Williams.
