Cloudy skies and a little bit of rain didn't stop runners and some walkers from lining up at the starting point for the first "Fix a Leak" Family 5k.
"'Fix a Leak' is meant to promote awareness of fixing leaks and the importance that plays in water conservation. It is a big part of our home's water bill when there is a leak," said event organizer Jennifer Patterson.
Patterson says leaky pipes could cost you more when the water bill arrives.
"We encourage people, look at your bills. When they start going up, question that if you don't know why it's going up," said Patterson.
"It's pretty important. It's kind of tough to talk about water conservation on a rainy day. It seems a little ironic, but it's is an important issue," said runner Bob Burger.
The race focused on water conservation, but there was a little competition at the event. Burger finished the race in first place, just seconds before his daughter.
"I've been doing running since the eighth grade, and I decided to do lacrosse instead this season, so my dad was like, 'all right, we're going to see how you are doing," Burger's daughter, Devon, said.
"It was kind of a challenge. I haven't beaten her in two years, so it's kind of nice to beat her today," said Bob Burger.
Though the wet course made for slick conditions, organizers say fixing a water leak now could save you bundles in the future.
The 'Fix a Leak' Family 5k kicks off the official Fix a Leak week, sponsored by the federal Environmental Protection Agency.
