Ways to Prepare for the Drop in Temperature

January 5, 2013

As the temperature drops around Central Virginia in the next few days it's important to find ways to stay warm.

Whether you use a blanket, a heater or a fireplace, keeping warm is essential.

“I have a heat pump, so I'm concerned that when the temperature drops that low that my heat pump won't keep the house heated,” says Ayotunde Dokun. “So I'm trying to get some space heaters to make sure that the temperature doesn't get too low in the house. “

Many people made their way out to the Lowe's hardware store in Charlottesville to prepare for the winter cold. They have plenty of ways to keep you warm, including electric heaters.

“You can take any one of these heaters and put it in any room, living room, dining room, and bedroom,” says Timothy McKee, assistant store manager for Lowe’s. “What's good about these units is that nowadays they've been very safe, so if an individual, a child, or someone elderly happen to knock it, it turns off automatically.”

With the electric heaters and gas fireplaces you want to make sure you are using them safely.

“Carbon Monoxide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and is something to be concerned of with gas,” says McKee. “With the fireplace you want to make sure an adult is putting wood in the fireplace, make sure it is a safe environment, nothing close to it that can catch on fire.”

Generators are also a good item to keep in mind as power outages could occur if too much ice builds up on electrical wires.

You can also use items like a window insulation kit or a draft stop that keeps the cold air from coming in through cracks in the doors and windows, while saving energy.
