What's Going Around: Abdominal Pain & Nosebleeds

December 17, 2012

Abdominal pain and nosebleeds are going around in central Virginia.

Doctor William Murray of Forest Lakes Family Medicine said patients are coming in more frequently suffering from nosebleeds.

He said they're often caused by dry air, especially indoor heat, head colds, nasal sprays, excessive nose blowing and injury.

Dr. Murray said the best way to treat a nosebleed is by applying pressure to the affected nostril, lean forward slightly and stay calm. After 5 to 15 minutes gradually release pressure. After another 15 to 30 minutes gently blow your nose.

When it comes to prevention, Dr. Murray suggests setting the thermostat lower and using a humidifier.

In Fluvanna County, Doctor Laura Howard of Palmyra Medical Associates is treating more people for diverticulosis or diverticulitis. Both involve small sac-like outpouchings in the colon. These conditions are often found during a routine colonoscopy.

Symptoms often include pain, usually on the left side of the abdomen, and can be severe and last a few days.

Both are treated with antibiotics.
