Many of us get occasional headaches, but if you've noticed that yours are becoming severe, more frequent and accompanied by other symptom, it may be time to see your doctor. In this week's What's Going Around we're talking about migraines.
We're checking in with Dr. Laura Howard of Palmyra Medical Associates and she says migraines are What's Going Around.
Symptoms of a migraine include pain on one side of the head, throbbing sensation in the temple around the eyes, visual disturbances like flickering lights or spots and nausea. Migraines may last for days if not treated promptly. The longer a migraine persists, the harder it is to treat.
Dr. Howard recommends a few different options for treatment starting with medication, like a prescription medication called "Triptan". For mild cases, she suggests ibuprofen and rest.
Prevention is key when it comes to managing migraines. Dr. Howard tells us migraines are often associated with certain triggers. Folks should avoid triggers such as fluorescent lights, loud noise, alcohol or lack of sleep. If you have frequent or debilitating migraines per month, you should see your doctor and discuss getting a preventative medication.
In our heath reminder Dr. Howard is encouraging everyone to stay hydrated during times of excessive heat to prevent heat exhaustion.
