What's Going Around: Strep Throat

March 11, 2013

This week strep throat and a viral illness are going around Central Virginia.

Dr. Paige Nolte of Palmyra Medical Associates is reporting an increase in the number of people with strep throat.

A sore throat is the leading indicator of the illness, along with fever, headache and stomach ache. Treatment involves antibiotics.

In Buckingham County, Dr. Cindy Napier of Buckingham Family Medicine is treating people for a viral illness.

Symptoms include nausea, fever, vomiting and body aches. Dr. Napier said it's contagious and advises people with the illness to stay home from work or school.

It's best treated with clear liquids, Tylenol, Ibuprofen and rest.
