From arthritis to the common cold, CBS19 is keeping an eye on the current illnesses passing through central Virginia.
We're checking in with Dr. Phyllis Montellese of Spring Creek Family Medicine. She says this week's topic is the unsightly blue or purple spots known as bruising.
Bruising typically happens in women and elderly people and can be more permanent as people age. Some people often notice a bruise without any recollection of an injury.
If the bruises are very large, dark, numerous or also associated with lots of little red dots on the skin, Dr. Montellese says it's time to see a doctor.
It's important to point out that deep bruises within the muscle most commonly occur during sports. For example, a hard blow to the thigh can result in deep muscle scarring and should be checked out by a sports medicine physician.
As always, Dr. Montellese is reminding people that flu season runs until May and it's never too late to get your flu shot.

Oh no! It's the great Bruising Epidemic of 2011. Everyone please run and get the bruise vaccine quickly before it spreads. From what I hear, it could be out of control within a matter of days. Take action now to save your life and the lives of others. God help us all.
