A top White House official visited Crozet Thursday morning for an event drawing attention to energy conservation, while also boosting Rep. Tom Perriello's re-election campaign.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack joined Perriello. Vilsack's boss, President Barack Obama, will speak at a rally for Perriello on Friday night. The back-to-back events suggest the White House thinks Perriello, a first-term Democrat from Ivy, has a shot at defeating challenger Robert Hurt despite trailing in opinion polls.

In Crozet, Vilsack and Perriello visited a home in the Yancey Mills neighborhood. It had undergone renovations aimed at increasing its energy efficiency.

"Particularly in rural America, it's an opportunity to reverse the trends we've seen over the last several decades of persistent and declining employment opportunities by creating a whole new industry," said Vilsack.

The homeowners had worked with LEAP, a local non-profit, that provides financial incentives for efficiency upgrades.

Not many Democrat candidates want to be as closely identified with Obama as Perriello does. The city of Charlottesville gives the highest percentage of votes to Democrats as any place in Virginia. Obama wants to go somewhere where he can find a friendly crowd. In the Virginia's Fifth Congressional District Charlottesville would be the place to fit that description.

I wonder if it is legal for a salaried employee of the US government to tout for a congessmen on the taxpayers dime. I also wonder wheter they spent more redoing the house or paying for his wasted day out of the office.

Maybe Mr. Valsak can find a nice green job for "One-term Tom" next month...
