"Why do you live where you do?" That's the question a new community survey is asking residents of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
The city and county are joining forces with the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission for the 1-Community Project, an initiative aimed at identifying the economic factors associated with housing. The first such joint effort of its kind in the region.
The commission is using a government grant to perform the survey and develop a comprehensive plan - including transportation and livability - to sustain local communities. They hope the survey will "maximize community engagement in the process and to encourage collaboration across municipal boundaries."
Although, the project doesn't come without critics.
"I believe that much of the work that's being done is helpful, but none of it has any real standing because each of the independent localities must ratify their own comprehensive plan," commented Neil Williamson, director of the Free Enterprise Forum.
Still, Williamson says the more people who fill out the survey the more accurate the results will be, which could impact any policy changes that come out of it.
