GRUNDY, Virginia (AP) — The Virginia Department of Forestry says six significant wildfires are threatening at least 60 structures in western Virginia.

Officials said Monday that the fires continue to burn, although three have been completely contained. One home has been damaged and one structure lost in a fire near Vansant in Buchanan County.

Three of the fires are in Buchanan County. The others are in Scott, Dickenson and Russell counties. John Miller, the forestry department's director of resource protection, says the fires have burned more than 1,000 acres.

Miller says warm temperatures, low humidity and strong winds have increased wildfire danger. More than 550 wildfires have already been reported so far this year, exceeding last year's total of 479. Nearly 8,500 acres have burned. That's two-and-a-half times more than all of last year.
