Woman Involved in Dumler Sex Case Speaks Out

February 27, 2013

One woman involved in the Chris Dumler sex case has come forward. She doesn't want to be identified, but says she had sexual relations with Dumler, which she called "scary and aggressive". When she heard another woman was pressing charges against him in October, she says she had to reach out.

"We weren't friends before and have got nothing out of this other than knowing that you're not alone," the woman said. "What people always say about rape is that it's he said she said, her against him, and I thought all I could say is she's not alone."

Motions filed in Albemarle County General District Court by Dumler's defense team in November, accuse two women of conspiring against the county supervisor, citing a Facebook message sent to Dumler which said, "We have a stake in you going down in flames." But accorded to documents provided by the woman involved, the quote was only an excerpt of that Facebook message. In its entirety the message read, "You chose to represent the public and we have a stake in you going down in flames".

"I think it's very important for the people of the Scottsville district trying to make a decision about how to react to this, is to know what he said in his defense strategy were half truths taken out of context.," the woman said. "To me, it's one more sign of him manipulating anyone or anything for what he wants."

Dumler admitted to having sexual relations with both the woman who pressed charges against him and the second woman mentioned in the court documents, however the 27-year-old maintains his innocence when it comes to the forcible sodomy charge.

"I remain confident, had we gone to trial, I would not have been found guilty of what I was charged with," Dumler said.

But his case never went to trial, because Dumler took a plea deal in January. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped the
charges down to a misdemeanor sexual battery charge. Dumler says he took the plea deal because he couldn't not afford to continue to pay his defense attorneys.

"I simply was not willing to essentially bankrupt myself to clear my name," Dumler said.

The prosecutor in the case didn't see it the same way. "That a sitting supervisor would plead guilty and accept jail time as part of his plea speaks volumes about his actions that night," said Jeff Haislip, the special prosecutor in the case.

Since his guilty plea, county supervisors and his Scottsville constituents have called for Dumler to step down from his position on the board, but he says he's not going anywhere.

"I have no intention of resigning at this time," Dumler said.

Dozens of protesters gathered at the county budget meeting on Monday to protest Dumler's position on the board. One woman was escorted out by police after screaming into the microphone during the public comment period that Dumler was a "rapist".

"I was never charged with rape and I was never found guilty of rape, so it's difficult to sit up there and hear that," he said.

But the woman involved in the case says Dumler should be held accountable. "He has endangered the health of at least four women over a month by his reckless behavior."

Part of Dumler's plea deal included two other alleged victims. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors said they would not move forward with charges in those cases. Dumler refused to comment on the additional victims, saying it would violate his plea deal.
