An Albemarle County woman suffered non-life threatening injuries after being shot in the neck by her boyfriend during a domestic dispute early Sunday morning.

CBS19 has learned that the suspect arrested in connection to the shooting, 53-year-old John Wesley Morris, was sentenced in 1985 to 46 years in jail after being found guilty of a double homicide in Albemarle County.

The victims were Ricky Clements and Monte Wanless.

Morris was sentenced to 20 years for each homicide and six years for two different weapons offenses. Despite the 46 year sentence, he was released on mandatory parole in January 2008 after serving only 22 years in prison.

Albemarle County Police responded to a call at 1:40am Sunday in the 1800 block of Inglewood Drive where they found a woman with a gunshot wound to the neck.

Shortly after 3am Sunday, an officer pulled over the vehicle of Morris on Buck Mountain Ford Road and took him into custody without incident.

"It's a great response by the police department," said Sgt. Darrell Byers of the Albemarle County Police Department. "They were able to get the suspect's information, they were able to canvas the area."

Police have confirmed that Morris and his victim were romantically involved. The female victim, whose identity has not been released, was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment. She reportedly cannot move either side of her body and remains hospitalized.

Morris has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm after having been convicted of a felony.

He was denied bond Monday. According to the Commonwealth attorney's office, Morris told his victim he was going to kill her and then shot her.
