The organization, Women United, of Charlottesville hosted the "How Safe Are You?" event at the Omni Hotel this morning.
Women came out to hear strategies and ways they can protect themselves from crime prevention specialist, Henry Finkel from the Charlottesville Police Department.
Finkel talked about car break-downs, ATM do's and dont's, home safety, panhandling and soliciting as well as walking in parking lots and safety online.
Women United Co-Chair, Maia Bannan spoke about why the event is important.
"Women's safety, just helping out the women in our community," says Bannan. "We just felt it was a really great time to have officer Harvey Finkel come in from the Charlottesville Police Department and speak to us about tips and tricks, not necessarily fighting techniques."
When walking in parking lots at night, Finkel also explained that you should give people the impression that you are sure of yourself and that it only takes 10 seconds for someone to steal a car.
About 75 women came out to the event today, the first event for the year for Women United. This is also the first time that they have worked with the Charlottesville Police Department.
