The 2014 World Cup may be playing out in Brazil, but soccer fever has arrived in Charlottesville.

Fans packed into bars Sunday night to watch team USA take on Portugal in their second appearance in the group round.

"America. That's the first and foremost. I'm glad I'm able to be apart of this and support the team," said Jonathon Mitchell, who was watching the game at The Biltmore on the corner.

American pride was spreading, even to folks not from the U.S. like Julie Nolet from Holland who was catching the game at a packed house at Trinity Irish Pub.

It's fun to root for the U.S.," said Nolet. "It's so exciting every time anybody scores everybody is jumping up it's crazy. I got hit in the face. It's really fun, it's so exciting."

The U.S. needed a win Sunday night to definitely move onto the next round of play. Optimism was high that the team could make it happen.

"It would be awesome to advance out of the group stage. If we win we are through. Clint Dempsey just scored and he's got like a broken nose. That really shows the American spirit," said Jeffery Schafer, who was decked out in an American flag while cheering on the team at Trinity.

Win or lose fans say the world cup is a chance to come together and root for the red, white, and blue.

"I believe. I believe that we will win," said Schafer.
