City Council voted to extend a ground lease for the Piedmont YMCA in McIntire Park.
The 4-1 vote came nearly five hours into a marathon council meeting Monday night.
Council gave the go-ahead for construction to begin five years ago, but that lease expires in January.
Construction can't begin since the YMCA, the City of Charlottesville, and Allbemarle County are tied up in a lawsuit with a group of area gyms.
The State Supreme Court isn't expected to render a decision at least for another month.
"We thought we had good cause shown for not being able to start the construction," said YMCA Board Chair Kurt Krueger. "We believe the city did the right thing by giving us another year to do it.
If the Supreme Court comes down with a decision in January, then the YMCA board plans to begin construction sooner rather than later.
