Volunteers are gearing up for a massive two-day yard sale in Albemarle County that will help raise money for a Haitian school and orphanage.
On Sunday, volunteers began organizing all the donated items that will be sold this Friday and Saturday at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church in Albemarle County.
The event is a fundraiser for a school in Grison-Garde, Haiti, that is managed by members of the Grison-Garde community and supported by several residents of Charlottesville, Albemarle and surrounding counties through the Robert Ford Orphanage and School Foundation.
The growing school now has 700 students.
"That's a big school by any standards, but in rural Haiti it's most unusual, and there are 210 secondary students now, meaning they have an opportunity to really systemically change, but we can't do it without efforts like this," said Dr. Raymond Ford of the Robert Ford Foundation.
Ford, an Albemarle County resident, goes to Haiti several times a year with a team of volunteers and medical volunteers who help build and maintain projects at the school, orphanage and nearby medical clinic.
Last year's yard sale raised $12,000. The money goes toward teacher salaries, food and clothes for the kids.
The yard sale will take place Oct. 4 and 5 from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church. The church is located at the corner of Old Lynchburg and Red Hill roads.
