A Nelson County deputy sheriff is under arrest after an off-duty domestic violence incident and has been stripped of his gun and badge, Sheriff David Brooks said Friday.

Deputy Joshua Hatter, 31, of Lovingston, was arrested Monday and faces three felony charges. Brooks said Hatter wasn't on the job at the time of the incident.

Hatter is accused of firing a gun in an occupied building, destroying valuable property and kidnapping. Those are all felonies. He also faces two misdemeanor charges. One person involved in the altercation suffered a minor injury, Brooks said.

Hatter has been on the force for about four years and he was dismissed this week, Brooks said.

Hatter was taken to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Jail.
