UPDATE: Chris Dumler Reacts to Being Stripped of Committee Seats

March 13, 2013

During a closed-door meeting Wednesday morning, Albemarle County supervisors presented Chris Dumler with a choice; to step down from his position as board chair on several committees or be removed.

"It was made clear that I had an opportunity to resign and if I did not do so voluntarily, I would be removed," said Albemarle County Supervisor Chris Dumler.

The meeting was described as "tense" and Dumler said he chose to step down. His five subcommittee positions have been divided up among fellow supervisors Ken Boyd, Rodney Thomas, and Dennis Rooker.

When asked how this would impact his ability to serve on the board, Dumler said he can still cast votes during board meetings.

"Everyone knows what happens in those committees knows what happens there goes through the full board for approval, and the duties of the board...don't happen on subcommittees, they don't happen on commissions," Dumler said.

The morning meeting was a makeup for a meeting canceled during last week's snow storm, and was not open to public comment. However, dozens of people showed up to the regularly scheduled meeting later Wednesday night to sign up to speak during the public comment period. The front row of Lane Auditorium was covered with signs protesting Dumler's presence on the board.

Protester Jamie Morgan said she plans on being at every board meeting until Dumler resigns. "I want to give a voice to the women he abused and who were silenced by his plea deal," Morgan said, referring to the plea deal Dumler made with prosecutors that prevents police from pressing charges in the cases of two alleged victims.

In January, Dumler plead guilty to a misdemeanor sexual battery charge. Protesters have been demanding for his resignation ever since, but Dumler says he has no plans to step down. Even after being stripped of his responsibilities, Dumler says he will continue on the board.

"I'm still committed to the position and still committed to those obligations and I intend to perform them."

The Albemarle Board of Supervisors has voted to remove Christopher Dumler from all of his committee chairs.

Supervisors divided up Dumler's seats, reassigning them to other board members. Ken Boyd took three, Dennis Rooker took one, and Rodney Thomas the final seat.

Dumler still sits on the board, despite being stripped of these board assignment chairs.
