For this week's segment of Make Dan Sweat, CBS19's Dan Schutte tried Judo. Judo is a modern martial art and combat sport.
The goal in Judo is to keep your opponent under control for 25 seconds, but the most important lesson at Sal Shin Jo Judo is learning how to fall.
"You have to learn to trust your ability to manage a fall which is very counter intuitive. At first, most people's reaction when you fall is to try to stop, but you will never beat gravity. The best thing you can do is manage it," explained Gene Shin of Sal Shin Jo Judo.
The word Judo means "gentle way".
"The primary characteristic of [Judo] is to yield if somebody tries to be aggressive. That is why it is gentle. Instead of meeting force with force, you yield and turn an attackers force against them," said Shin.
Judo is both a physical and mental workout. "It definitely becomes a chess match," explained Shin.
One of the biggest benefits of Judo is the self confidence it can bring to both adults and children.
"I've been working with people my entire Judo career, so I've learned to just go with it," said Asa Shin, a Judo student.

Nice falling, Dan! I imagine working on live television is good preparation. My son and I also are privileged to attend this dojo, which I recommend highly for many reasons, although the poise and confidence shown by young Asa in Dan's report tells you all you need to know. Sensei ni rei!
Nice report. This dojo is a great asset to the community. My two kids (7 and 9) and I are all members, and it's the greatest thing to do together. It's about the best exercise you can imagine, and the discipline also reinforces concepts of respect and courtesy at every turn.
We enjoyed the visit Dan and hope you will come back. I began working out at SSJ Judo two years ago with my son who was 6 at the time. We have both found it to be a wonderful, life altering decision. My son has developed physically in ways that help him in a range of sports. But most importantly the confidence and perspective that Sensei Shin teaches has impacted other aspects of his life from academics to how he treats and interacts with friends. For any parents out there looking for a martial art I would definitely recommend visiting the kids class that also always has a number of dads on the mat. Participating in Judo with my son has been an amazing opportunity to watch him and our relationship grow as we have worked out together.
