The Charlottesville Fire Department is taking the Plant Strong Challenge. Those who partake in the movement only eat food that comes from plants, they believe meats and other products contain too much processed food.

"It's the best way to eat. We're getting rid of the animal products, we're getting rid of the dairy, we're getting rid of the processed refined foods," said Rip Esselstyn, who created the Plant Strong program.

Esselstyn is a fire fighter and former elite triathlete, he has been on the Plant Strong diet for years and claims it is the secret to his success.

"Look at the largest, strongest animals on the planet. They are herbivores. They get all the protein they need, all the essential amino acids from green leafs and from grains," said Esselstyn.

Esselstyn is challenging the Charlottesville Fire Department to go 28 days of living Plant Strong.

"As people realize more about nutrition, they will realize if you want to go to first class foods, they go to plants, then you won't get any unnecessary baggage. It's like premium fuel," said Esselstyn.
