Habitat for Humanity Breaks Ground for New Charlottesville Neighborhood
February 13, 2013
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville broke ground Wednesday on its newest neighborhood: The Belmont Cottages.
The neighborhood will have 15 homes, in a mixed-income community. The Belmont Cottages will include eight Habitat homes and seven market-rate homes.
Charlottesville Mayor Satyendra Huja, and others involved in the project, gave speeches at the groundbreaking.
"It really helps us focus on the day in a few months time when a partner family who's worked so hard to get to this point walks through the door, gets their key and walks through the door as a homeowner for the first time," said Dan Rosensweig, the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville Executive Director. "This really starts to bring that into focus and it's just a great feeling."
The Cottages will help Habitat meet its new goal of building at least 20 homes each year for low-income residents in order to create more local affordable housing.
