Special Olympics Bowling Season Rolls Out

January 20, 2013

The Special Olympics' bowling season came to an end Sunday on a roll.

Teams have been taking over Kegler's Lanes in Albemarle County every Sunday for the past 10 weeks. Athletes have come out each weekend to compete and spend time with friends.

Some of the players have been playing in the Special Olympics league for a decade, while others are just beginning and learning the game with bumpers.

Parents of some athletes say it's a great experience for everyone.

"Most of them come back year after year, and they play multiple sports, so we really get to know each other," said Kathy Young, a league organizer and mother of one of the athletes. "As a parent, I get to know other parents and family members, so that's a really great support system as well."

Six athletes from the league will compete in a state winter competition next week.
