Children are learning about the power of produce at the Charlottesville City Market at a new stand on Saturday's

Volunteers with UVa's Jefferson Public Citizens program are spending their time on Saturday's teaching children about how fresh produce can keep them healthy through small activities and taste tests.

With parent consent, all participants will taste a new vegetable or fruit each week and learn about how produce grows from seeds. Then children will receive two dollars in market bucks to spend on maybe the food they just tasted or any produce item at the market.

"Sometimes children don't get a lot of exposure of fresh fruits and vegetables, so what we're trying to do here is say 'here, try this apple without caramel or chocolate but it'll be good, you'll like it!'" Third year UVa student volunteer, Kate Breimann said.

Kids can learn about the power of produce at the city market stand every Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 until October 13th.
