Fire Chief Wins Governor's Award

February 16, 2012

For the fourth time, Charlottesville Fire Chief Charles Werner will be receiving the Governor's Fire Service Award for Excellence in Virginia's Fire Service Management.

The annual award celebrates a person who has demonstrated exceptional dedication, management, excellence and leadership within their own department, as well as other fire departments in the Commonwealth. It will be presented to Chief Werner on Feb. 25 in Virginia Beach.

Werner has held the position of chief for seven years, and has served in the Charlottesville Fire Department for the past 34 years. He says he cannot take all the credit, as the members of the department also deserve recognition.

"It's the great men and women of the Charlottesville Fire Department who really do all the work here, and too many times I get the credit for it. It's always a team effort, so this award that I've received will be for all the people I work with to make great things happen," Chief Werner said.

Werner is the only four-time recipient of the award.
