CATEC Fair

March 2, 2013

A resource fair in Albemarle County Saturday had a mission to help youth with disabilities make an easier transition into adulthood.

The conference and resource fair at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center provided a series of workshops on everything from housing and guardian issues to legal rights in the workplace.

Certain workshops focused on finding a suitable job in a tough economy and learning what kids of accommodations disabled children can advocate for.

"The biggest barriers I think are often things that are hard to predict," said Emily Dreyfus, who attended the event. "I know my child is going to need some kind of accommodations, and learning from employers about what kinds of accommodations they might be able to provide was really helpful."

Parents said it was especially helpful to hear tips on how active a role they should play in their children's life after graduation.
