Donations to Food Bank Could Drop Further If Local Farm Closes

November 29, 2012

Fresh produce for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank could be in jeopardy.

Food Bank CEO, Larry Zippen, says a local farm is hurting for financial support and without money it will have to shut down. The farm generously donates more than 150 thousand pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Zippen says the need for food remains high as more people in our area can't put food on the table.

"Produce has been one of the fields of hope, no pun intended, for us to be able to supply nutritious food to hungry people as opposed to the traditional dollar meals or heavy carbohydrate-laden pizzas."

The Food Bank is reaching out to other farmers and grocery chains, hoping to forge new partnerships to meet local needs.
