Cville Time Bank Encourages Bartering for Services

You may have heard the saying, "Time is money." In Charlottesville, that phrase is becoming more true.

The Cville Time Bank is preparing to launch. It's a reciprocal service network that allows people in the same area to provide professional services or tasks in exchange for another.

Anyone involved can offer a service -- anything from home improvement work to teaching someone how to knit. Every time someone performs a service, he or she ears a time dollar.

Time dollars can be exchanged for another service.

"The time bank can operate exchanges anywhere from basic household chores to professional services," said Kathy Kildea, co-chair of the Cville Time Bank. "Whatever our members are able to offer and are in need of, we can make those matches in the time bank to get those needs met."

The entire system is tracked online. The people behind it are trying to recruit as many people as possible to expand the number of services available.

"You may be an attorney and be able to offer legal advice, but you don't have time to clean out your garden," Kildea said. "The time bank is a great way to get what you need from the other members."

The time bank will hold a potluck on Sunday, Jan. 20, for anyone interested in taking part. It will take place at 5 p.m. at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Unitarian Church on Rugby Road in Charlottesville.
