Piedmont YMCA Construction on Track to Start in Spring

The Piedmont Family YMCA is one step closer to reality.
The staff has been meeting with architects and contractors to determine an updated cost of construction.
The meetings are coming after last month's decision from the Virginia Supreme Court, which dismissed lawsuits against the YMCA. The lawsuits tied up construction for years.
Because of the delay, the new cost estimate for the YMCA is now about $800,000 more. The estimated cost is $14.77 million.
"The delays have brought us some undue hardships," said Dennis Blank, the CEO of the Piedmont Family YMCA. "We'll get beyond that, we'll move forward and we are moving forward."
Construction is expected to start later this spring and take 16 to 20 months. The staff expects to move into the building by fall 2014.
While there will be some detours in McIntire Park during construction, the park will not close, nor will major events be canceled.
