November 22, 2012

The tradition at Boar's Head continues yet another year. The 31st Annual Boar's Head Turkey Trot was held early Thanksgiving Morning.

Even though it was quite chilly outside, More than 1,300 runners came out for the 5K race. The even raises nearly $30,000 a year for the UVa Children's Hospital.

Mark Sochor, a Turkey Trot runner, said the race makes him feel better about eating a big Thanksgiving meal later on in the day. "Personally, I just feel that if I get up early in the morning run in the Turkey Trot, I feel less guilty about eating all of that turkey dinner later on in the day."

In the end, the race is all about raising money for children in need. Janet Centini, Chair of the UVa Children's Hospital Committee, said, "At the UVa Children's Hospital, we have over 100,000 visits a year from children. It supports anything that the children needs in the hospital and their families. It goes toward anything that really helps them feel comfortable."

The top runners ran the race in less than 16 and a half minutes and the winner receives a turkey.
