Dairy Cliff Reactions

December 28, 2012

If Congress does not avoid the fiscal cliff, taxes could go up for millions of Americans and if Congress does not avoid the dairy cliff, the cost of milk could double.

And that's not going over too well with people living in Charlottesville.

"Oh no. No way. I don't look at prices, I just get my milk but 8 dollars? Oh no," said Thomas Douglas, a Charlottesville resident who was picking up milk on Thursday night for cereal.

Similar reactions from shoppers at Reid's Super Save Market to the fact that milk and other dairy product prices could double come january if the U.s. goes over the fiscal cliff. This would mean milk could reach $8.00 a gallon.

Chermaine Stinnie is a mother of five children and she says she doesn't know what she'd do if prices double.

"I might as well get my own cow and make my own milk because I don't know about paying $8.00 for it," she said.

Some people say they've cut down their budgets completely during these hard economic times but now a trip to the grocery store could be a little more stressful than it already is.

"When we go to the grocery store and keeping a total of our grocery bill, once we got to the milk isle that's when it started getting really expensive so I can't imagine it getting much worse, it's already the most expensive isle in the grocery store," said Rachel Smarte, a Charlottesville resident.

It's that one late-night trip to the grocery store to pick up some milk for the house that will be a little harder.

"There are five guys that live in my house and we go through a gallon a day easily so I have to come back only for milk everyday," said Charlottesville resident, Hunter Williams.

There are lots of questions going into the new year but for some people, they didn't think those questions would be about milk.
