Busy Weekend for Goodwill, Salvation Army

With only two days left of 2012 there are a lot of things people want to get done before ringing in the new year. One of them, is cleaning out the house.

"Today we are just getting rid of everything while no one's looking," said Charlottesville resident Elizabeth Galanti who donated lots of old toys.

"It just feels good to clean out my closet after the holidays and bring it over to Goodwill," said Albemarle County resident Casey Mahanes.

There's also two more days to get tax deductions for making donations to places like Goodwill or The Salvation Army.

"It's a great time of the year to get a tax break and everything to get money back for moving and donating items that maybe somebody else can use," said Lisa Atkins, a Charlottesville resident who is in the process of moving. She said it was perfect timing to unload everything they don't need and save some money, too.

Some say especially since times are tough, donating and saving tax dollars are a great way to end the year and they say Goodwill makes it easy.

"It's really simple, we just estimate what everything was worth and ya know put it in with our taxes its great," said Galanti.

"It was not a hard thing to do at all and yeah you get a little something extra back so that's good," said Fluvanna County resident Christopher Stevens.

Goodwill had a packed parking lot on Saturday afternoon and employees said there was a steady flow of people donating and shopping inside the store as well. It's all to save a little money while wrapping up 2012.
