(AP) Gov. Bob McDonnell has filled vacancies on the governing boards of the University of Virginia and the College of William & Mary.

McDonnell appointed William H. Goodwin Jr. of Richmond to U.Va.'s Board of Visitors. Goodwin replaces Randall J. Kirk, who resigned in October 2012.

Sue H. Gerdelman of Williamsburg was named to fill a vacancy on William & Mary's Board of Visitors. She replaces Laura L. Flippin, who stepped down in September 2012.

Goodwin previously served on U.Va.'s board from 1996 to 2004. In June 2012, McDonnell appointed Goodwin as a "senior adviser" to the board following its failed attempt to oust President Teresa Sullivan.

Gerdelman is a former chair of the William & Mary Foundation's Board of Trustees.

McDonnell announced the appointments Monday.
