A book reading hosted by the Charlottesville and Albemarle County Democratic committees was interrupted Saturday morning by protesters sounding off on their disapproval of Christopher Dumler retaining his seat on the county Board of Supervisors.
Dumler pleaded guilty to a sexual battery charge in January.
"As the Democratic Party that he supposedly represents, I don't want this person representing me," protester Bailee Hampton said.
Protesters held up different signs reading "rapist" and "resign." They say Dumler's presence on the board is mocking constituents, people of Scottsville and women.
"This man never went to trial for any of these three accusers who came forward. He got a sweet plea bargain," said protester Jordan McNeish.
Protesters want Democrats from both Charlottesville and Albemarle County to speak against Dumler keeping his seat.
"The local Democratic Party, all you in this room can agree that this person should not hold a public office even though it's legal for him to do so," said Hampton.
Some people understood that protesters wanting to speak out. However, some people didn't agree on the way they presented their message or much of their message completely.
"A lot of the things that these young people were saying to me were not facts, as they were making accusations against Chris. I think we need to stay in a fact-based argument over this," said Democratic party member Cynthia Neff.
Protesters say they're not going away anytime soon.
