Big Read Kicks Off With Art Exhibit

March 1, 2013

The Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JMRL) is launching it’s 7th Annual Big Read event today and to kick it off, tonight is the opening of the art exhibit "Famous First Lines." It features artistic hand written renderings of first lines from different books and short stories and will be on display all month long.

You can see the first lines from Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven. Also there are lines from the declaration of independence by our very own Thomas Jefferson. A representative from the big read gave more information about the exhibit.

“You can see famous first lines by Terry Coffey, a local artist has done some artwork based on Virginia authors and the first line of the joy luck club and they are beautiful,” says Sarah Hamfeldt, Reference Manager at Jefferson-Madison Regional Library.

“Be sure to register your book club with the library system because at the end this year as a surprise we have a finale feast, which we haven't had before at Peter Chang's China Grill.”

The book this year is the "Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan and takes place in San Francisco's China Town in the 1940’s.

Not only is today the start of the Big Read at the JMRL, but it is also the National Education Association's read across America day.

The exhibit is open from 5 to 7 p.m.
