Fluvanna High School Students Protest Against Teacher Furlough Days

Fluvanna County High School students protested in between classes Friday morning. They're upset over the school board decision to make teacher take furlough days. They say they're afraid they are going to lose their teachers.

"The students in this high school are not ready to lose these quality teachers," said student Veronica Voronina. "We need these teachers. This is our education. This is our future."

The Fluvanna County Sheriff was called by school administrators to address the more than 200 protesters. Administrators say they were able to get students to disassemble before law enforcement arrived.

"I had them to walk the halls just to let the students know they were in the building," said school principal James Barlow. "They did not have to do anything towards forcing kids to go back to their class."

Students say the back and forth between county supervisors and the school board over budget problems is starting to have an impact on their education.

"Even though I was born in Russia, I call America my home. This country has given me so much opportunity and to see education crumble like this, its just very emotional for me," said Voronina.

It's an emotional issue that is a long way from being resolved.
