Poker Tournament Raises Money for a Cause

February 9, 2013

Chips -- but not dip -- are required while playing at the fourth-annual Carson Raymond Foundation Casino Night. More than 100 people played poker for a cause in honor of a little boy gone to soon.

"Carson was my oldest son, and unfortunately he died in 2009 because of the H1N1 virus, and he loved baseball," said Carson's father, John Raymond.

Proceeds from the event help underprivileged kids participate in neighborhood sports programs.

"Last year, two kids who never played before in their lives got to play courtesy of our program," said fundraising director Dana Alston.

Alston explained that during a game, a baseball player asked the coach, "Why didn't you tell me baseball was this must fun?"

It was the players' first time playing the sport, an opportunity provided by the foundation.

"I'm really impressed that every year I've been here, more and more people show up for this great event, and I hope that it continues," said poker players, Susan Frazier.

Though Carson is no longer here, his memories, his life and his favorite pastime will live on with kids given the opportunity to play his favorite sport.
